Should I Get A Law Degree?

Posted by: Pharmacy Technician | Comments (0)

Everyone has heard the old line “there are too many lawyers”.  While this may be true, the next question one must as is…why?  Why is pursuing law such a popular path to follow and what exactly are the benefits and negatives of pursuing a law degree?  In this article I’ll explore the ‘right’ reasons and also some ‘wrong’ reasons to pursue this time consuming and expensive undertaking.

The Love of Law

The first and ‘best’ reason to pursue a Law Degree is of course that you absolutely LOVE the law.  Do you sit up late at night debating controversial legal issues with your friends?  Do you find yourself getting into heated arguments over the right to fair trial of non-citizen combatants in the Iraq war or perhaps the various ethical and legal sides of the abortion issue.  Is your favorite channel C-span or Court TV and is your book shelf full of books about famous legal cases or issues?

If this sounds like you then you might be law school material.  The best lawyers…and law students have a PASSION for the law.  They don’t look at reading 500 pages of a constitutional law book as work, they relish it.  While there are certainly other good reasons to go to law school, perhaps no other is as good a predictor of success as your love of the subject matter.

Critical Thinking

One of the often overlooked but perhaps most important skills you learn by attending law school is the development of your critical thinking ability.  The ability to look at an issue from its various sides, do the research to fully understand the intricacies of an issue and the ability to argue and defend your position are incredibly valuable skills that will serve you for the rest of your life in and outside of the law field.

Many attorneys find that the research and critical thinking skills help them in areas they never even considered from personal relationships to managing employees and building a business.  Of course these skills are crucial in the legal profession itself, but a legal education can be a great exercise in improving one’s ability to handle the complex negotiations of life.

Career Dynamite

Obtaining a law degree can be a tremendous asset when paired with a degree or specialized knowledge in another field.  By using your specific knowledge and experience and having a law degree you then are perfectly tailored to work as legal counsel for a plethora of fields.

For instance a pharmacy degree paired with a law degree makes you a great asset as counsel in a firm that specializes in pharmaceutical firms.  Architecture, real estate or construction experience teamed with a law degree can make you a great real estate attorney.  The real world experience you possess in the specific field makes you an invaluable asset to law firms that might have top notch attorneys but little hands on, practical experience in that field.

Wrong Reasons

It is very important to be aware of the wrong reasons to pursue a law degree…and there are many.  Some people decide to go to law school because they simply don’t know what else to do.  Besides being an obvious waste of time, most often these people do not end up even working in the legal profession.

Others want to become an attorney not because they really like law, but because they want the perceived ‘prestige’ that having a law degree attaches.  People that go to law school for this reason tend to have self-esteem issues and are looking to fill a void with the ‘title’ of lawyer even though they really have very little passion for the profession.  They often don’t really know what they want to do and think spending three years in school is a way of either staying out of the ‘real world’ or that they’ll ‘figure it out’ in law school.  Law school is so work intensive that is highly recommended you don’t attend unless you really know you want it for the right reasons.

Finally, there’s the money.  While any profession is ultimately responsible for giving you a pay check, potential law school candidates should be aware that the vast majority of lawyers don’t make gobs of money.  While it is true that if you attend a top, Ivy League school and get into a top firm you can make a very good living, this is really only something that a very small percentage will accomplish.  The big money starts if you make Partner in a firm, which is highly competitive and can take many years.  For those simply looking to make good money, there are other professions that are comparatively easier to accomplish this in finance and banking and without the need to attend law school.  However, if your passion is the law then there are certainly great financial rewards for those that position themselves correctly.  For more great articles and insights please visit www.LawDegree.me.

Located in the heart of Texas, Abilene is charming and progressive city of 120,000 people which carries the nickname, “the Friendly Frontier,” a homage to the Western heritage of the area. Abilene was founded in the 1880s as cattle shipping site on the Texas and Pacific railway, but grew steadily over the years to become a mid-size metropolitan area offering many cultural and educational opportunities for residents and visitors.
Abilene has several festivals each year which highlight the frontier history of Abilene, including the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, which is held the second weekend of March; the Western Heritage Classic Rodeo held on the second weekend in June; the West Texas Rodeo, which begins the Friday after Labor Day, and the Spirit of the Frontier Festival, which occurs on the first Saturday in October each year. Some of the interesting sites to visit include the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, which features numerous historical buildings, a reenactment of frontier life in the late 1800s, as well as exhibits featuring numerous Indian artifacts and frontier rifles. For those visitors who have an interest in military history, the nearby Fort Phantom Hill offers the ruins of an 1851 Army post for tourists to explore. Frontier Texas is a museum dedicated to the early history of Abilene and features interactive exhibits which give visitors the opportunity to experience simulated buffalo stampedes, Wild West shootouts and prairie thunderstorms.
Other interesting attractions include the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, the Abilene Zoo, the Abilene Children’s Museum, the Paramount Theatre, and the 12th Armored Division Military Museum. Abilene is also home to the Dyess Air Force Base, which is the area’s largest employer, and it also has an aviation museum that is open for tours. For those visitors interested in the performing arts, Abilene also has a well respected orchestra and ballet company.
A variety of lodging is available for visitors to Abilene. Most major hotel chains provide lodging in the area at a wide range of prices. There are also several quaint bed and breakfasts that offer accomodations with a Western theme. Excellent restaurants abound in the area, offering genuine Texas barbeque, top rated steakhouses, and authentic Mexican cuisine.
Education is a very important factor in Abilene’s economy and culture. In addition to having the highest rated public school system in Texas, and the 17th highest rated school system in the United States, Abilene is also home to several institutions of higher learning including, Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, McMurray University, and the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy.
For those who are interested in turning a visit into a long term stay, real estate is offered at a wide range of prices in Abilene. The average home price as of October 2008, was $168,000, which will buy a comfortable 3 bedroom family home and is an excellent value for the money compared to other similar sized cities across the Southwest and South. In addition, there are many luxury homes available in the Abilene real estate market priced from $500,000 to $1,500,000.
Overall, Abilene is a community that is rich in heritage, but progressing into a 21st century city that is large enough to offer a wide range of interesting attractions and educational opportunities, but small enough to retain its unique identity.

Pharmacy locum jobs seek to fill temporary vacancies caused by the permanent pharmacy jobholder going on leave, and on other such contingencies. As people are always going on leave or resigning or falling sick and so on, there is a steady flow of locum jobs. Pharmacies cannot legally function without the oversight of a qualified pharmacist and the support of pharmacy technicians.

For the locum employee, temporary jobs might be best owing to the person’s personal circumstances or preferences. They specify their rates of pay, traveling distance, working hours, etc to the locum agency, and also indicate the period during which they would be available for locum work. The agency notifies the employee when a vacancy matching the person’s criteria arises.

It is the locum agencies that attend to the key function of matching employees and pharmacies, both of whom would find things difficult without such an intermediary. What the Locum Pharmacists Gain

Pharmacy locum jobs agencies help the locum pharmacists utilize their hard-earned expertise to earn good money, without having to be bound by inflexible working hours and other conditions of a full time job. This can prove valuable for those persons who simply cannot work at full time jobs for one reason or other.

The agencies also help locum employees to keep up with developments in their field and also support them with helpful hints. One high value service is keeping an account of each locum’s earnings and helping the person with tax formalities and returns applicable to self-employed persons.

Locums can also get help with pharmacy practices such as pharmacy operating procedures, ordering procedures, computer operations and so on. This kind of support can be invaluable for those who have kept away from work for long periods.

As and when each locum job is taken up, the agencies can smoothen the induction process by providing employer-specific information to locums. Information such as contact details, working hours, parking details and so on can help the newcomer fit into the new engagement quickly and smoothly. What the Pharmacies Gain

Unless a pharmacy employs surplus staff, operations can be disrupted when a key employee, such as a pharmacist, goes on leave or otherwise becomes unavailable. Considering the high pay of the professionals, it is not an economic proposition to employ surplus, backup staff.

In such a context, the pharmacy will have to find a new employee at short notice. This becomes particularly difficult if the employment is for a short term. Instead of focusing on its business, the pharmacy will have to go out looking for qualified employees willing to fill the temporary position.

Agencies that specialize in pharmacy locum jobs will have a good number of locum pharmacists in their database, many of whom might fit the pharmacy’s requirements. Pharmacies can thus quickly find a temporary replacement by approaching the agency.

In Britain, the National Health Services – NHS – works with a network of agencies that provide locum professionals when needed. In this way, NHS is able to function with few disruptions.

Health care or healthcare is an industry associated with the the prevention, treatment, and management of illness along with the promotion of mental, physical and spiritual well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions. It is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries, consuming over 10 percent of gross domestic product of most developed nations. The industry includes the delivery of health services by specialist providers, such as midwives, doctors, nurses, therapists, home health aides, vaccination technicians and physician’s assistants. It includes preventive care, vaccination, screening, diagnosis, prescribing and administration of medicine, surgery, observation, and attendance at childbirth. Usually such services receive payment from the patient or from the patient’s insurance company, although they may be government-financed (such as the National Health Service in the UK) or delivered by charities or volunteers, particularly in poorer countries.Health care can form an enormous part of a country’s economy. In 2000, health care costs paid to hospitals, doctors, diagnostic laboratories, pharmacies, medical device manufacturers and other components of the health care system, consumed an estimated 14 percent of the GNP of the United States, the largest of any country in the world. For the G7 countries the average is about nine percent.Prior to the popularisation of the holistic neologism healthcare, English-speakers referred to medicine or to the health sector and spoke of the treatment and prevention of illness and disease.Medical and social model of healthcareThe more generally accepted view of healthcare is that improvements result from advancements in medical science. The medical model focusses on the eradication of illness through diagnosis and effective treatment. In contrast the social model of healthcare places emphasis on changes that can be made in society and in people’s own lifestyles to make the population healthier. It defines illness from the point of view of the individual’s functioning within their society rather than by monitoring for changes in biological or physiological signs.
